A name is a gift
One everyone gets when they're young
Everyone uses it
It's expected of you
But what happens when it doesn't feel right?
When it feels thick on the tongue
Like sickly sweet molasses
Stuck in your mouth
The feeling of a scream
That will never come out
Wanting to run
But having doubt
Wanting to hide
But you know what they'll shout
Shout the name that lurches your heart
With the fleeting sense of security
Replaced with hurt
For what is a name
But letters to make sounds
That sound good in our ears
Something to be proud by when someone cheers
What is a name
But a gift we were given
One expected we carry with us forever
The only gift meant to last
Never outgrow
The first gift
The longest gift
A connection to our past
But gifts don't always last forever
Well most of them don't
As we grow and change; gifts we once had loved
Now are only loved in our memories
But the first gift we do not choose
No say in, no influence
One everyone else will use
Before the person ever knows what to do
A part of themselves were chosen
A part you’re not supposed to lose
Yet a name is a gift
And gifts change with time
A gift you get now
Won't be the same as when you were five
And while most names don't change
There are some people who know
That their first gift
A name
Is not one that will help them grow
So why can't they change it to one they feel fits
For a name is a gift
And not all gifts fit
